Significant Incidents: December 2018

Renton RFA responded to 1,415 incidents during the month of December, 2018. Below are details on the most significant incidents that occurred throughout the month.

5 Significant Fires

• On 12/5/18 Renton RFA responded to a building fire in Station 11’s area at the 180 block of Hardie Ave in Downtown Renton. We responded in conjunction with Skyway FD and King County Medic One with 2 engines, 1 ladder truck, 1 aid car and 1 officer rig for a total of 12 personnel from stations 11, 12 and 14.  This was a garage fire that extended to a vacant house on the property being renovated.  According to the fire investigation, the cause of the fire was undetermined.
• On 12/8/18 Renton RFA responded to a building fire in Station 17’s area at the 15500 block of SE 179^th St in Fairwood. We responded in conjunction with Kent FD with 4 engines, 1 ladder truck, 1 aid car and 2 officer rigs for a total of 19 personnel from stations 11, 13 and 17.  The fire started in the kitchen but did not cause significant damage to the property.  No one was injured and no residents were displaced.  The preliminary cause of the fire was believed to be burned food on the stove.  The King County Sheriff fire investigator was called to determine the official cause of the fire.
• On 12/19/18 Renton RFA responded to a commercial building fire in Station 14’s area at the 900 block of Lind Ave in the Renton Valley. We responded with 2 engines, 1 ladder truck and 1 officer rig for a total of 10 personnel from stations 11 and 14.  The fire started in the bathroom with toilet paper being ignited.  The fire was a result of a suspect trying to elude police.  The fire was quickly extinguished and no one was injured.  The suspect was apprehended by police.
• On 12/21/18 Renton RFA responded to a building fire in Station 11’s area at the 80 block of Logan Ave in Downtown Renton. We responded in conjunction with Skyway FD, Tukwila FD and King County Medic One with 3 engines, 1 ladder truck, 1 aid car and 2 officer rigs for a total of 16 personnel from stations 11, 12 and 14.  This was a house fire that was contained to the kitchen and more specifically, the microwave.  There was smoke damage to the first floor and the residents were able to find shelter on their own.  There were no injuries as a result of the fire.
• On 12/29/18 Renton RFA responded to a building fire in Station 14’s area at the 600 block of SW 5^th Ct in the Renton Valley. We responded in conjunction with Skyway FD and Tukwila FD with 2 engines, 1 ladder truck and 2 officer rigs for a total of 11 personnel from stations 11 and 14.  The cause of the fire appeared to be some clothing that was lit on fire and left in the back corner of the elevator for the building.  It was not determined at the time of the incident if the fire was accidental or intentional.  There were no injuries as a result of the fire.  No residents were displaced.

5 Significant EMS Calls

• On 12/7/18 Renton RFA responded to a serious car versus bicycle accident with injuries in Station 11’s area at the 400 block of Rainier Ave N in Downtown Renton. We responded in conjunction with King County Medic One with 2 engines, 1 ladder truck and 2 officer rigs for a total of 11 personnel from stations 11 and 13.  1 patient with serious injuries was treated and transported to Harborview Medical Center.  The cause of the accident was undetermined at the time of the incident.
• On 12/9/18 Renton RFA responded to a shooting in Station 14’s area at the 600 block of SW 5^th Ct in Downtown Renton. We responded in conjunction with Skyway FD and King County Medic One with 1 engine and 1 officer rig for a total of 4 personnel from station 14.  There was 1 unidentified male victim with a gunshot wound to the head in a car.  The cause of the shooting was undetermined at the time of the incident and is currently being investigated by the police.
• On 12/14/18 Renton RFA responded to a shooting in Station 12’s area at the 3000 block of Sunset Blvd NE in the Renton Highlands. We responded in conjunction with King County Medic One with 1 engine, 1 aid car and 1 officer rig for a total of 5 personnel from station 12.  The male shooting victim was shot in the hand and had superficial injuries as a result of an assault.  Patient was transported to Valley Medical Center for further treatment.
• On 12/17/18 Renton RFA responded to a possible xylene odor in Station 13’s area at Valley Medical Center. We responded with 1 engine, 1 haz-mat unit and 1 officer rig for a total of 7 personnel from stations 11 and 14.  The smell was reported as coming from the lab and possibly from solvent containers.  The source of the xylene leak was ultimately identified and removed from the lab for proper disposal.  There were no injuries or exposures as a result of the incident.
• On 12/18/18 Renton RFA responded to an assault and shooting in Station 13’s area at the 4700 block of Smithers Ave S. We responded with 1 engine, 1 aid car and 1 officer rig for a total of 5 personnel from station 13.  A male victim and his son was assaulted and tied up.  The father was threatened at gunpoint.  The victim heard one gunshot when the assailant was out of sight.  The male victim’s daughter suffered a gunshot wound to the head and did not survive.
