This April, Fairwood voters will be asked to decide whether to permanently join Renton RFA.
We have provided fire and emergency medical services to the Fairwood community for over 17 years via our contract with King County Fire District 40 (KCFD 40). This April, the KCFD 40 Board of Fire Commissioners have officially put a measure on the ballot asking Fairwood voters to decide if that contract should become permanent.
IF PROP 1 IS ACCEPTED
- KCFD 40 will have greater representation on the Renton RFA Governance Board, which oversees the financial direction of the organization, going from one nonvoting member two voting members.
- Funding for KCFD 40 capital projects, such as building a fire station or purchasing a fire engine, will be spread across Renton RFA’s entire jurisdiction, rather than being solely funded by Fairwood taxpayers.
- Other contracts KCFD 40 currently holds with Renton RFA for services such as IT and the Fire Marshal will also be eliminated, as these services will be provided to Fairwood as part of our jurisdiction.
- Fairwood will experience a reduction in overhead and workload for their Board of Fire Commissioners. Over time, additional measures will reduce the number of commissioners from five to three, meanwhile, the administrative workload of the commissioners will be assumed by the Renton RFA administrative team.
IF PROP 1 IS REJECTED
- The $6.3 million* contract for service between KCFD 40 and Renton RFA will continue as written.
- Fairwood will continue to be represented by only one nonvoting member on the Renton RFA Governance Board.
- KCFD 40 capital projects will continue to be solely funded by Fairwood taxpayers.
- The overhead and workload of KCFD 40 Fire Commissioners will remain as-is.
This April, Fairwood voters will decide the future of fire and emergency medical services in their community. If you are a KCFD 40 voter, please be sure to make your voice heard by April 22, 2025. To learn more about this important ballot measure, visit our website at: www.rentonrfa.com/fd40prop1.
*$6.3 million contract amount is based on the 2025 contract fee and may fluctuate from year-to-year based on the terms of the contract.
