We are devastated by the tragic events in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho yesterday, where Kootenai County Fire & Rescue firefighters were lured to an intentionally set brush fire only to be ambushed by a gunman, killing two and critically wounding another. These firefighters woke up ready to serve, ready to protect their community, ready to save lives. Never expecting that someone would set a trap to end theirs.
Today, our hearts are broken. The pain of this loss is profound and reaches far beyond Idaho. It ripples through every fire station and every community across the country. We mourn the lives that were taken so violently and so senselessly. These were people who dedicated themselves to running toward danger to keep others safe, who spent their lives easing fear and bringing hope to those experiencing their worst moments. And they were met with violence instead of gratitude, hatred instead of help.
Earlier this month, violence struck our own community when a gunman fired into Fire Station 12 here in Renton, forcing entry into a place meant to be a safe haven for those who serve. Thankfully, no one was physically harmed, but the emotional impact remains. It reminds us all that danger is not confined to burning buildings or busy highways. It can find its way to us anywhere, at any time.
The rise in violence against first responders is deeply troubling. These attacks are unprecedented and unpredictable. While we remain vigilant and will continue to prioritize active shooter training and ballistic protection to keep our members safe, today our focus is on honoring those who were lost and acknowledging the depth of pain felt throughout the community of Idaho and across the fire service.
We send our deepest condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues left behind. Words feel small in moments like these. But know that we stand with you in sorrow. We see and feel your pain. And we will carry the memory of your loved ones with us in every call we respond to and every life we work to save.
May those who lost their lives in this unspeakable act rest in peace. May their dedication, their courage, and their sacrifice never be forgotten. And may we, as a fire service family and as a community, hold one another a little closer in their honor today.
