Distracted Driving Awareness Month

April is distracted driving awareness month. Distracted driving is a major factor that causes traffic fatalities and accidents. A distracted driving crash is any crash that resulted from the driver being distracted from safely operating a vehicle. One of the most common distractions while driving is cell phone use, including texting, talking on the phone, and social media use. Other common distractions include adjusting the radio or GPS, applying makeup, and eating and drinking.

Follow these safe driving tips can help keep yourself and your passengers safe on the road:

  • Always keep two hands on the wheel while driving.
  • Keep your eyes on the road at all times.
  • Pull over and park your car in a safe location if you need to send a text.
  • Do not scroll through apps or social media while driving.
  • If you are struggling not to text or check your phone while driving, try putting your cell phone in the trunk, glove box, or back seat of your vehicle until you arrive at destination.
  • Do not try to multi-task while driving.

Your attention to detail on the road could save your life as well as the lives of those around you. Help us keep our amazing community safe. Stay safe, Renton!
