According to the American Heart Association, heart disease is currently the number one cause of death in the United States, and nearly half of all adults in the U.S. have high blood pressure, a leading cause of heart disease.
Tips for a Healthy Heart:
- Add exercise to your day. Getting enough exercise is an important way to stay healthy and prevent disease. Adults should try to get at least 150 minutes moderate intensity aerobic activity (such as brisk walking) or 75 minutes of vigorous activity (like jogging or running) each week.
- Choose a healthy diet. The food you eat can decrease your risk of heart disease and stroke. Try to eat a diet that includes lots of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, fish, nuts, plant based proteins, and lean animal proteins. Limit red meat, beverages high in sugars, and foods high in sodium and saturated fats.
- Manage stress. Chronic stress over extended periods of time can lead to high blood pressure, which can increase your risk for a heart attack or stroke. Try managing your stress by getting enough sleep, making time for friends and family, and practicing relaxation techniques, such as meditating.
- Quit smoking. Smoking can increase your risk of heart disease. Quitting smoking can help your heart and blood vessels.
- Learn the warning signs of a heart attack. Knowing the warning signs of a heart attack is important because it can lead to early identification of symptoms and fast action which can increase a person’s chance of survival.
- Have regular wellness exams with a healthcare provider. Regular wellness exams are important for heart health. Be sure to talk to your provider or healthcare team about diet, lifestyle, and any other concerns.
