Job Summary:

Work is completed as an individual contributor who is part of a team.  Perform public safety work involving the protection of life and property by fighting fires, responding to emergency incidents, delivering emergency medical care, engaging in pre-fire inspections, participating in training, and taking part in community outreach events.  Complete tasks according to established policies and procedures, and contribute through knowledge, skills, and good work habits.

Job Duties / Responsibilities:

Essential Functions:

  • Perform firefighting work including combating, extinguishing and preventing fires.
  • Operate fire apparatus, tools, and equipment.
  • Protect lives, the environment, and property.
  • Provide emergency medical care within the scope of practice for an Emergency
  • Medical Technician-Basic (EMT-Basic) as defined by the Washington State Department of Health and King County.
  • Analyze dangerous situations rapidly and accurately and take a reasonable course of action.
  • Take accurate readings of gauges and equipment, keep routine records, and make minor mechanical repairs and adjustments to fire apparatus, tools, and equipment.
  • Participate in drills, training, and classes in firefighting, disaster response, emergency medical care, and specialized rescue.
  • Receive and respond to emergency incidents and non-emergency requests for assistance.
  • Participate in fire company inspections, pre-incident planning of buildings, and public outreach events.
  • Complete all necessary forms and paperwork and maintain accurate records as designated or required.
  • Perform general maintenance work of fire suppression facilities.
  • Maintain professional relationships with co-workers, members of other City departments, the community and members of partnering emergency services agencies.
  • Read, interpret, and/or follow maps, plans, and diagrams.
  • Know and apply the Fire Authority’s values in achievement of the mission and vision.
  • Remain current with relevant technological advancements.
  • Perform related work as outlined in the Renton Regional Fire Authority Standard Operating Procedures.

  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • May be assigned to support critical city priorities during disasters or other emergencies.

Education, Experience, and License Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • At least 18 years of age at time of the written examination.
  • Citizen or legal resident of the United States.
  • Certified National Registry EMT-Basic and meet the requirements specified by King County within the first year of employment. (An extension may be provided based on the availability of the classes.
  • Certified as an International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) or National Professional Qualifications Board (ProBoard) Firefighter 1 and 2, and Hazardous Materials Operations through the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1001 within first year of employment
  • Participate in and successfully complete all three years of the Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee (JATC) Program and sign a written agreement to that effect.

Work Environment / Physical Demands:

The following represent the physical demands that must be met to successfully perform the essential functions of this job:

  • Routine work activity requires moderate strength, endurance, and aerobic capacity.
  • Emergency response operations require significant physical capacity.
  • Heavy manual labor while wearing firefighter personal protective equipment, or personal protective equipment, designed to address the specific hazards associated with special team work (i.e. hazardous materials encapsulating suits, wet suits, and dry suits etc.).
  • Work outdoors in all types of weather.
  • Manual dexterity and visual acuity required.
  • Crawling, bending, stooping, kneeling, and performing repetitive lifting for an extended periods of time.
  • Working from considerable heights.
  • Work in hot, smoky environments with little or no visibility.
  • Lift heavy objects in awkward and confined spaces, using proper lifting and rigging techniques.
  • Frequent communication with RFA employees and the public.
  • Driving and field work required.
