OFM Pub Ed – Business Holiday Fire Safety Checklist

Holiday Fire Safety Requirements for Your Store

While decorative lights and trees bring festive cheer to Renton this holiday season, fire safety should never be far from mind-especially for stores and shopping centers.

FIRE SAFETY CHECKLIST

Renton Regional Fire Authority wants to help businesses manage the risks associated with decorations, increased crowd sizes and merchandise storage during the holidays. Please use this checklist to ensure your store is fire safe and code compliant:

  • Ensure all employees are trained on your emergency evacuation plan, know where all exits are located, and understand their roles in the event of an emergency.
  • Use only flameless, battery-operated candles in decorative holiday displays.
  • Keep flammable decorations such as wreaths and trees away from heat sources like open flame, light bulbs, and candles.
  • Confirm all exit signs are visible and unobstructed by ornaments or other decorative materials.
  • Keep all aisles and exits (including those located in storage areas) clear and unobstructed by merchandise or decorative displays.
  • Maintain at least 18 inches of clearance below the lowest point of all fire sprinkler heads.
  • Ensure all fire lanes are well-maintained, clearly marked, and unobstructed at all times. NO PARKING is permitted in the fire lane. Additionally, ensure that cargo or storage containers do not obstruct or impede fire lanes.
